This quote is very true for all of us. Let me give you my own story. I went to college in California, where the sun shines most of the year. I studied Psychology and my major was not even remotely related to my future career.

I have always been a science freak, but I wanted to be an English teacher. It was only my second semester that I knew that I had to change my major because there were no jobs in that field which paid well enough to live on in California. After graduating, I moved back home to my hometown, San Francisco where I have been living happily ever since. Upon moving back home, I enrolled at a local community college which is only four miles away from where I lived with my parents.

After two years at the community college, my mother suggested that I move out and get a job because the rent was getting too expensive given the income of the job market around where I lived. I got a job as a Psychology research assistant which paid me $11 an hour. Even though it was not much money, it was enough for me to rent an apartment which is about 10 minutes away from campus and commute every day for three hours per day. The commute was not easy at first but now that I am used to it, it has never been so easy and convenient as before! Next year when I graduate from college, if things go as planned, then I will start looking for a full time job which will allow me to live comfortably on $24000 per year (which is the national average salary for these jobs).

While $24000 may seem like a lot of money by some standards, let's say you lived on this average salary for 30 years and saved 20% after tax: $24000 * .20 = $48k. $24000 - $48k = $144k you would have accumulated after 30 years; this is equivalent to $144k if you had worked the same job for 40 years at least! This leaves you with more than enough money left over for your retirement like any good financial planner would recommend! Now don't get me wrong: as someone who loves Psychology as much as I do, these jobs are really great and we should be thankful we have them because we make science happen and we open up new doors of knowledge everyday!
